Ground Vehicle Volunteer

The core of our network. Drive your normal routes — or an assigned sector — with our app running. The AI scans for suspect vehicles while you focus on the road.

  • Smartphone (iOS 14+ or Android 10+)
  • Dashboard or windshield car mount
  • Valid driver's license
  • Background check (we cover the cost)
  • Completion of online training

Drone Pilot

Aerial nodes provide coverage that ground vehicles can't — open areas, parking lots, highway interchanges, wooded corridors. Your altitude gives coordinators a perspective no camera can match.

  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (required)
  • Own drone (DJI Mavic 3 preferred)
  • UAS liability insurance
  • All ground volunteer requirements
  • Part 107 scholarship available for new pilots

Mission Coordinator

The human-in-the-loop that keeps our system honest. Coordinators review AI detection events and decide what reaches law enforcement. Requires prior experience as a ground volunteer.

  • Minimum 3 completed ground volunteer missions
  • Separate coordinator application and interview
  • Extended background and reference check
  • Dedicated coordinator training program
  • Law enforcement or emergency management background a plus

Getting Started

From application to first mission

Apply by Email

Send an email to info@amberangels.org with your name, location, and which role you're interested in. We'll send you the application form and next steps within 48 hours.

Background Check & ID Verification

We use a third-party background screening provider. The process takes 3–5 business days. This is non-negotiable — it's a requirement of our law enforcement partnerships and the communities we serve.

Complete Online Training

Our training covers the app, operational protocols, privacy rules, and safety procedures. It takes approximately 45 minutes and is fully self-paced. Drone pilots complete an additional pre-flight checklist module.

Install the App & Complete a Practice Run

Once your account is approved, install the Amber's Angels app, run through the in-app practice mode in your driveway or parking lot, and confirm your mount is stable and camera angle is correct.

You're Live — Respond When You Can

When an AMBER Alert fires in your area, you'll receive a push notification. Accept or decline — there's no penalty for being unavailable. When you can go, tap Accept and drive.

Questions

Common questions from new volunteers

What if I see the suspect vehicle while on a mission?
Do not follow it. Do not stop near it. Continue driving normally. The app has already flagged it — your coordinator is handling it. Call 911 only if you witness an active emergency in progress.
Does the app record my video or track me outside of missions?
No. Video frames are processed in memory and deleted immediately — never written to disk. GPS is only active during a mission you've accepted. Between missions, the app has no background activity.
Can I participate if I don't have a car mount?
Not for active vehicle missions — a mounted, stable camera is required for accurate AI detection. Mounts run $15–$30 at most auto parts stores. Contact us if cost is a barrier.
I want to become a drone pilot but don't have my Part 107. Can I still apply?
Yes — apply as a ground vehicle volunteer and note your interest in drone operations. We offer Part 107 training scholarships through our pilot grant funding. We'll work with you on a path to certification.
Am I liable if something goes wrong during a search?
Amber's Angels carries general liability insurance that covers volunteers operating within our established protocols. Volunteers are explicitly instructed not to confront or pursue suspects — your role is detection only. Drone pilots must carry their own UAS insurance.
I'm a retired law enforcement officer. Is there a more active role for me?
Absolutely — your background is exactly what our coordinator program is built for. Please mention your experience in your application email.
